As the title suggests, “My Mother’s Book” is a story about mother tongue and national identity.
A mother has three sons and one daughter. Her sons, educated in Europe, Russia, and Persia, have all grown distant from their roots. When she tries to decide her daughter’s future, none of them understands her or shares her values.
Symbolically, none of the sons reads their mother’s book — they have forgotten both their mother and their homeland.
Through gentle humor and deep sorrow, Jalil Mammadguluzadeh’s classic play portrays the tragedy of a generation estranged from its culture, faith, and language.
